WHAT IS DRINK SPIKING?

Drink spiking can occur anywhere, drinks are served (such as at nightclubs, parties, pubs, restaurants and private homes). Drink spiking can be linked to crimes such as sexual assault and robbery.

To spike a drink means to put alcohol or drugs into someone's drink without their knowledge or permission.

HOW CAN I TELL IF MY DRINK HAS BEEN SPIKED AND HOW TO AVOID IT?

Date-Rape Drugs effect start in 15-30 mins and last 3-6 hours, although the symptoms depend on which drug has been used, ​its manifestation include the following:

  1. Lower inhibitions

  2. Difficulty concentration

  3. Loss of consciousness

  4. Loss of memory or (amnesia)

  5. Loss of balance and trouble controlling muscles

  6. Visual problems,  particularly blurred vision or hallucinations. (seeing, hearing or touching things that aren’t there)

  7. Feeling confused or disorientated, particularly after waking up (if you’ve been asleep)

  8.  Alter someone's self-defense capability or decision-making

The following steps may also help prevent drink spiking:

For Individuals

  1. Always Watch Your Drink: Keep an eye on your drink at all times. If you need to leave it unattended, ask a trusted friend to watch it or take it with you. ​​​​​​

  2. Accept Drinks Only from Trusted Sources: Only accept drinks from people you trust and watch the bartender make your drink. Avoid accepting drinks from strangers or leaving your drink unattended.

  3. Cover Your Drink: Use your hand or a drink cover to protect your drink when you're not actively drinking it. There are also products available, such as drink caps or covers, designed specifically to prevent tampering.

  4. Use the Buddy System: Stay with friends and look out for each other. If someone appears overly intoxicated or is acting strangely, help them get to a safe place and seek medical attention if necessary.

  5. Trust Your Instincts: If something feels off about your drink or the situation, trust your gut and don't drink it. It's better to be safe and get a new drink.

  6. Be Aware of Symptoms: Know the common signs of drink spiking, which can include dizziness, confusion, nausea, vomiting, and feeling excessively drunk for the amount of alcohol consumed. If you experience these symptoms, seek help immediately.
